Neve Sha'anan Cathedral

Neve Sha'anan neighborhood in south Tel Aviv is a home to thousands of immigrants from Africa, mostly from Sudan, Eritrea and Nigeria. The idea was to design a cathedral in Neve Sha'anan for christian migrants who are now finding themselves improvising spaces and buildings for the purpose of religious gatherings.

While wandering the neighborhood we endowed to discover different christian religious streams. That led us to design a multi-cultural cathedral which will include six intimate churches inside that will meet the rising need for variety of churches.

The chosen site for the cathedral  location was the old central station, that served between 1942-1993 as a bus station and commercial center. Today it is a deserted and neglected area of 10,000sqm that is waiting for a new urban renewal opportunity.
STARTING POINT
OUR PROPOSAL
The site is located in the heart of a mixed uses area. It's knowon by it's lack of open public spaces, compared to the northern and central parts of the city.
In order to preserve the open public space, we designed an underground cathedral which uses the existing pedestrian tunnel. This enabled us to utilize the space as a public square in which the catedral is functioning as hidden  element.
