Urban Acupuncture
The old city centers are gradually fading and are being abandoned by successful businesses and strong population. Those are moving to the suburbs and to new commercial and industrial centers, isolated from the old city centers. Old city centers are economic, cultural and community assets of great importance and mustn't be allowed to sink.
The need to generate meeting points and public activity centers is essential and when those places are not available, the urban life in them is low and lacking. In order to maintain an ideal city, there is a fundamental need in street and square life.
Today there is a trend of neglecting the old city centers and accelerated development of a new centers, without any attempt to deal with the existing and to forge relationships with it.
In specific reading of the old city center in Holon we have located areas with a lower level of activity and abandoned buildings. Those areas, which are loaded with memories and symbolism, wish to survive and to boast and be desirable again.
Time has made them obsolete for some purposes, yet available for other purposes.
In our assessment, Holon urban renewal can be realized through the revitalization and empowerment of the sustainable centers. Preserving the original functions while infusing new functions according to the new city needs, will drive and leverage the old city center.
We believe that when the city centers will undergo a process of preservation and recycling, it will affect the surrounding environment and praise the real-estate value.
Such action would enable an applicable renewal process through condensation of the existing rather than destruction.
The proposed process is a long term project, yet it will preserve the historic fabric of the city, its character and qualities.
The local aspect of the process investigates each center on its own in the aspects of construction, program and areas of potential impact. In the same breath, the urban perspective sews the centers together in order to create a feeding and renewing city-wide system.
